The Gilded Age: A Tale of Yesterday
Saint Augustine, Florida in the age of gold.
WHITEHALL
Henry Flagler, a founder of the Standard Oil Corportation and a railroad tycoon, built Whitehall for his third and final wife, Mary Lily Kenan. The home was completed in 1902 and was Flagler's wedding present to his new bride. This lovely building was designed by architects Carrere & Hastings, who had helped Flagler by designing the Ponce de Leon Hotel and many other Gilded Age buildings throughout Florida.
Whitehall was Flagler's winter home and was built much further south than the Ponce Hotel. Flagler would pass away at 83 in 1913 and left Mary Lily to live in the home alone until her death four years later.
Today Whitehall is a public museum dedicated to Henry Flagler.
