The Gilded Age: A Tale of Yesterday

SAN MARCO HOTEL
The San Marco Hotel opened its doors in 1885 and was one of the biggest competitors against Henry Flagler when built his hotels in the area. The building was owned by Isaac Crufts who wa one of the most sccessful developers in Florida. The building sat on 20 acres of land, one of the largest in St. Augustine. The San Marco Hotel was four stories tll and as built next to the Hugenot cemetery, across from the Castillo de San Marcos (Fort Marion). The hotel had everything from a billiard room to a theatre later attached to the hotel.
The San Marco Hotel burned down during a fire on 17 November 1897.
