The Gilded Age: A Tale of Yesterday
Saint Augustine, Florida in the age of gold.
GRANADA HOTEL
One of the hotels that has been forgotten within St. Augustine, the Granada Hotel was located directly across from the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Opened in 1899 the 73 room hotel offered its guests suites with views of the finest buildings in St. Augustine. The Granada Hotel was within walking distance of the following locations: The Ponce de Leon, Alcazar, Casa Monica, Villa Zorayda, and the Hotel Buckingham.
While not as grand as the Ponce de Leon, or as large as the Alcazar the Granada attracted guests with its unique decor. Being one of the more artistically designed and furnished hotels, the Granada remained open, for a time as the Alhambra Hotel (after 1913), until the building suffered the fate of many during those days. A fire burned down the Granada in 1954. The site of the hotel is currently occupied by a bank.
