GENOVAR OPERA HOUSE

The Genovar Opera House was originally constructed on the corner of Cuna Street and Charlotte Street and was a large two story building. After a fire completely destroyed the structure, its creator B. Genovar reconstructed it on St. George Street. This was the only entertainment structure capable of handling the large number of tourists who were flooding the city of St. Augustine.

Famous abolitionist, Frederick Douglass was known to have given a speech in the opera house. The building remained a site for entertainment until it burned down again in 1914 and was never rebuilt.
