The Gilded Age: A Tale of Yesterday
Saint Augustine, Florida in the age of gold.
ALCAZAR HOTEL
The Alcazar Hotel was built in 1887 and opened in 1888. It was owned by Henry Flagler and built directly across the street from the Ponce de Leon Hotel. The architects (Carrere & Hastings) that Flagler hired to design the building also designed the New York Public Library and the enate Office Building in Washington D.C.; the hotel had many modern luxuries including a steam room, bathhouse, gymnasium, a massage parlor, a bowling alley, and the world's largest indoor swimming pool at the time.
